The Onufri National Museum in Berat has been adapted to the Church of "The Blessing of Saint Mary" Church, on the Castle of Berat, since February 27, 1986. The Museum is named "Onufri", one of the chiefs of Albanian painting of the XV century.

  • History
     

The church was rebuilt in 1797 in the Kala neighborhood, it was the cathedral of the city. The cathedral is the most representative monument of post-Byzantine architecture in the city of Berat. The museum's collection consists of 173 selected objects from a fund of 1500 objects belonging to the funds of the churches and monasteries of Albania, and the city of Berat, where 106 are icons and 67 are liturgical objects, and belongs to the iconographic Albanian painters who have created in the XIV - XX centuries: Onufri, Nikolla son of Onufri, Onufër Qiprioti, David Selenica, Kostandin Shpatarak and Cetiri (Gjergji, Nikolla, Johani, Naumi, Gjergji i riu) and many other anonymous painters. The icon holder of the Cathedral of Berat has been painted by Naumi Master from Lavdari i Oparit and master Stefan Barka from Oros Misrasi, in the middle of the nineteenth century.

The Onufri National Museum is located in the center of the neighborhood inhabited by the medieval castle of the city of Berat. It includes a rich iconographic fund and several service objects. The museum is organized in the church premises of St. Mary's Cathedral, built in 1797, on the foundations of an older church of the same name. This museum is named after the most prominent Albanian painter of the century. of XVI, Onufri, who has left a wealthy fund in iconographic creativity. The museum complex consists of the church's central hall, the altar environment, as well as a number of auxiliary bungalows on the north, and two-story, west side. The museum has three main halls, featuring the best works of the authors mentioned above as well as other authors. In addition to the icons exhibited in the museum's premises, a special series also represent the icons set in the church's iconostasis, which are works by the painter Joan Cetri. In the showcases are also exposed some textiles and metal objects, which testify to a craft tradition of a high level of Treviso, Berat.
